Interview with Elisabetta Sanguineti | Lonely Jester | 3D Artist

Artist Introduction

I'm Elisabetta and I'm from Italy. I'm a freelance 3d artist with a focus on digital clothing and accessories. I started approaching digital clothing and 3d props creation 6 years ago as a hobby, but since a couple of years this has become my job. I love contributing to my clients' projects, whether they are video games or short films or commercials. I recently created a profile and store on Artstation to share and compare with other 3d artists.

Can you give us a quick overview of the different tools used in your pipeline?

For this project, where the focus was the jester character, I started by creating him. I used Marvelous Designer's standard male avatar, since the character has a mask so I didn't need any special features for his face or hair, I just needed a body with good proportions.

I tried different methods for creating the "puffy" part of sleeves and pants, after a few attempts I fond this shape to have the best result.

I don't usually model shoes on Marvelous Designer but I wanted to try it and I liked the result. For these, I used leather as the fabric and added some folds in the back with the sculpt tool before exporting.

Since I knew the character would be sitting, I needed the back of the jacket to be sufficiently attached to the body, and for that, I simply used some tacks. Regarding the hat, to get it in the right position, I used a tack that started from the pointy end of the hat and went to the shoulder, with a thread length of 180mm.

After creating the dress in " A pose," I created in Blender a short animation of the avatar from A pose to sitting ( about 25 frames), exported it to alembic format and then imported it into Marvelous Designer to get the final pose.

The mask, gloves and everything else in the scene were created in Blender, the textures in Substance Painter and the render in Marmoset Toolbag.

How can you describe your overall experience of the use of the Marvelous Designer?

I use Marvelous Designer literally every day and I think it is an outstanding and essential software for any 3d artists, not only for clothing creation but also for environment, furniture and props. Many file formats are available for import and export, the possibility to integrate Substance materials, the possibility to do retopology, and for example, you can also export the model in.SAMD format, compatible for the Sansar virtual world, you can also find the related Sansar avatars in the Marvelous Designer library. These are some of the features that make it so powerful and so versatile for any pipeline workflow.

One of my favorite things about Marvelous Designer is the ability to create garment animations with excellent quality and realistic simulation for any type of fabric. It is also very important that you can find a lot of tools to learn how to use the software, personally, I have watched tons of videos online and also the discord community is very active!
