Sisters In Arms -Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
Find out how Marvelous Designer is used in Cinematic Trailer of "TOM CLANCY’S RAINBOW SIX SIEGE"
Interview with Digic PICTURES | Sisters In Arms -Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege | CFX Artist
Introduction: Interviewee Artist & Digic pictures
I'm Tamás Varga, I work as a character supervisor at Digic. I'm Zoltán Turkovich, Character FX lead at Digic.
We’d like to hear more about the art direction of each character in costume. What was the visual style you were aiming for?
ZT: The film shows the life paths of the two sisters as they work for the Polish counter-terrorism corps JW GROM to take on more and more serious tasks and then join the Rainbow Six team, where they eventually turn against each other because of their increasingly sharp personal differences.

We wanted to show their different personalities in Ela and Zofia’s civilian clothes, contrasting the look of the younger brother with a loose denim leather jacket with his sister’s more restrained, elegant style and their father’s funeral uniform.
It was also important that the two raids in the film make it clear to the viewer that they were different events. We also wanted to help with the fact that the gangsters in the harbor wore elegant suits and sweaters, and the criminals running the drug lab in Warsaw were dressed in colorful casual clothes in accordance with the Polish “dresiarz” subculture.

Why did you decide to use Marvelous Designer? How did it help you serve art direction?
We have been working with Marvelous Designer for many years, the first major application of which took place 7 years ago at Witcher 3 - A night to remember.
In our experience, Marvelous Designer is great for shaping the fit, look and dynamic behavior of your clothing in parallel. Another important aspect was that after the costumes were made, we were able to perform the costume simulation work for each shot with this software - so we guaranteed the same results that were approved by the director and art director during the character look development.
Can you give us a quick overview of the different tools used in your pipeline?
TZ: Character FX, the body animations made in Maya are transferred to Marvelous Designer as alembic. The dress dynamics setting and the simulation process are done in Marvelous Designer. After the simulation, we run the garment alembic from the Marvelous Designer on a UV basis, combining the rendered garment geometries and finalizing the completed simulations.
Could you give examples of some of the iconic scenes and characters Marvelous Designer has been used for?
TZ: From the Sisters in Arms project, I could highlight criminals in warm-up clothes. One of the most iconic scenes is when the protagonist fights one of the Thug and presses him to the table. For the dynamics of softer warm-up clothes, we were able to achieve very nice results in Marvelous Designer.
Are there any tips and tricks with Marvelous Designer that you can share with the community?
TZ: What might be useful: The UV-based connection between the render and the Marvelous Designer garment geometries leaves you free to set the performance and shot depending on the Particle Distance within Marvelous Designer.
There are some very good dynamic dynamics presets, they are worth experimenting with, but depending on the performance, they are fine-tuned. Avatar preparation and proper body deformations are important to achieve more realistic dress simulations.
How can you describe your overall experience of the use of the Marvelous Designer on the production of Sisters in Arms -Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege?
TZ: The big advantage is that Marvelous Designer is easy to use and learn, which is why even novice CFX artists quickly learn to use it. In addition to easy operation, detailed parameterization and physically accurate clothing simulations can be easily achieved with the appropriate parameterization.
