Fashion doll designer and fashion design student Dollfication captured the community’s heart with her pastel-toned reinterpretation of late '90s Gyaru style, earning her the Community Choice Award in the Marvelous Designer Creator’s Contest 2025. Artist Introduction: please tell us about yourself.

Hello Hello, I go online by Dollfication, I am a Fashion design student in my last semester and a full-time freelancer specifically as a fashion doll designer. My main motivation to join this contest was because the theme interested me but also because I have been having fascination with Japanese fashion and street style since decades. I even created in my second semester a winter Kogal inspired collection. So, it all seemed like the perfect time and the perfect place to be a destiny if you will and therefore, I had to participate in this contest.

We’d like to hear more about the art direction in your Creator’s contest 2025 Vol.1 Seifuku Decoded Contest. What was the visual style you were aiming for?

The main visual style that I was aiming for was a classic early late 90’s/00’s kogal Gyaru look with a pastel themed color palette I also wanted the overall look and fantasy to be very cute and doll-like even cartoonish. Animes like “My Dress-Up Darling” or “SuperGals” were definitely also a huge inspiration for the overall look.

Would you be able to give us a quick overview of the different tools you use in your pipeline with a focus on Marvelous Designer? Have you encountered any challenges and how have you overcome them?

The base avatar that I used was a CLO “Jinny” avatar however I did modified it in some way or another buy giving it a different more tanned skin tone compared to the original pale skin tone and changing the eye color as well as completely changing the makeup look overall to a more Gyaru late 90’s/early 00’s makeup. The Outfit was created using both mix of CLO and Marvelous Designer. I also created a custom repeat pattern for the skirt and bow using procreate and photoshop.

Are there any tips and tricks with Marvelous Designer that you can share with the community?

Honestly just experiment and see what works for you best, Its all about creating a workflow that suits your needs, learn by trying and testing, cut and transform a basic starter shirt in CLO/Marvelous Designer and enjoy the journey of learning! ♡
