Artist and Project Introduction
Hello, I’m 3D artist Soohwan Oh.
Currently, I work as a freelancer, leading various visual projects primarily within the entertainment and beauty industries. I often handle the entire process—from initial planning to final production—solo, though I also participate as a supervisor or team member for larger-scale projects. As a 3D generalist, I take a hands-on approach to most stages of the creative workflow.
This project was my submission for Pwnisher’s ‘Dream Sequence’ challenge held earlier this year. The core task was to express a sense of motion synced to 120bpm music, which I chose to interpret through the theme of DJing. I wanted to make the visuals more engaging by integrating traditional Korean elements. Drawing inspiration particularly from the energy of BLACKPINK’s ‘JUMP’ music video, I worked with the vision of a DJ festival taking place in a near-future Seoul.
How was Marvelous Designer utilized in this project?
Character design was pivotal for this work, as the entire scene—including camera animation, stage lighting, and fireworks—revolves around the central DJ figure. While the character wears a Hahoe mask (a traditional Korean mask) to highlight cultural roots, I also needed to convey a streetwear aesthetic that fits a modern DJ. Therefore, the core objective was to create a costume that naturally fused Korean traditional beauty with a contemporary street vibe.
Marvelous Designer was an indispensable tool throughout the detailed planning and production of these garments. Beyond standard clothing creation, it proved highly efficient for incorporating complex elements like the Gonryongpo (royal dragon robe) features and traditional Korean patchwork details.
What are your favorite features or tools in Marvelous Designer?

First, I frequently use ‘M:N Free Sewing.’ As garments become more complex, the sewing process can often get confusing or tricky. However, as long as you know which patterns connect to which parts, this feature allows for a fast and intuitive workflow, which is a massive help in saving production time.
Second is the ‘Attach to Measure (Avatar)’ feature. Although I didn’t use it for this specific project, it is incredibly useful for securing garments to the character. For example, simulations can sometimes become unstable when fabric is tucked inside shoes; in such cases, I use this tool to pin the cloth to the ankle area for stability. It’s also great for scenes with hanging fabrics, like curtains, where the support structure isn't visible in the camera frame. By attaching the fabric to a simple primitive, I can achieve a natural look very quickly—making it a go-to tool when I need to deliver results on a tight schedule.
Lastly, I frequently utilize the ‘Graphic (2D Pattern)’ feature. I often create and export Diffuse maps directly within Marvelous Designer, and this tool significantly boosts my efficiency. It allows me to intuitively visualize how graphics are applied to a pattern even before the UV unwrapping stage, making the overall workflow much more streamlined.
